Obituary:

Calvin L. Spiegel, Jr., age 76 of Westminster, MD, passed away on May 26, 2023, on the birthday of John Wayne. Calvin was born January 17, 1947 in Baltimore, MD but was shaped and raised by West Virginia. He was the son of the late Louise and Calvin Spiegel.

Loving husband of Victoria Spiegel (Doody), proud father of Christopher (Iron Tail) and Christina (Disney), Chad (Mr. Pig), Lauren (The Bear) and Nick, Tessie (The Bird, Tweety) and Nate (The Nat, Harry Wormwood). Extremely proud grandfather to Xander, Aspen, Theodore Calvin, and Samuel.

Calvin tolerated people, but loved animals, especially dogs. He was preceded by his beloved cocker spaniels, Lady, Maddie, and Lily. He leaves behind his baby Molly and the distinguished General Sterling (Mr. Fat Cat).

He was brother to Mike and Lolet Spiegel and was the adoring uncle of Robert and Jennifer. He leaves behind many family members and friends that he considered his family. Calvin never went anywhere without making a lifelong friend.

He was tremendously proud of his military service, as a 3-year veteran of the US Army; Calvin was a Soldier from then on. Upon returning home, he become a volunteer firefighter, responding and racing to calls in his silver Renault with young Christopher in tow. He worked at Sweetheart Cup for 25 years, where he met his cherished wife and friends that became brothers. Calvin went on to become a truck driver at DM Bowman; he loved his time on the road, listening to audiobooks, drinking flat soda, and playing practical jokes on his brothers on the road.

There was nothing that Calvin enjoyed more in life than his pickup trucks and classic cars. He could identify a classic by just looking at the taillights. His favorites included the ’57 Chevy Bel Air and his ’86 C10. Many of his days were spent cleaning and waxing his cars, and taking his dogs for a ride. Calvin loved to cook; there wasn’t a person he met that he didn’t feed. “I’m not hungry” was not an option and seconds were mandatory. He was known for his signature dishes and would quickly learn your favorites, adding his own touch. When not in the kitchen, you would find Calvin loudly watching his favorite movies, over and over again.

Calvin left us all with an enduring lesson: “A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.”
