Obituary:

Monroe Edward Wright, 101, of Sykesville, passed away peacefully at his home in Sykesville on September 19, 2022. His son Gary was by his side and his niece Pamela Myers was also present.
He was born in Carroll County on April 3, 1921, to his parents, Edward Augustus Wright, and Edna Dayhoff Wright. In 1947, he married his loving wife Pauline Grimes Wright. They had two children and were married for 38 years, until she predeceased him in July of 1986.
Mr. Wright was a graduate of Sykesville High School, was an active member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church for many years and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served in World War II on the European Western Front as a tank driver, rising to the rank of master artillery sergeant.
He began his work career as a welder for the Glen L. Martin Corporation. He soon transferred to the Armco Steel Corporation, where he worked for over 30 years and rose to the position of maintenance supervisor for the entire plant. In his 50s, a few years before retiring from Armco, he became half-owner of Hyson Bros., Inc., a furniture, and appliance store in Hampstead, where he worked until his retirement age.
Having grown up on a farm, he was an active vegetable gardener until his mid 90s. An avid traveler, he was able to visit all 50 states, as well as traveling to Australia, Europe, and Russia. He loved watching westerns on TV and eating out at restaurants, something he was able to do at least several times a week until shortly before his death.
He is survived by his son Gary Wright of Sykesville, his daughter Connie Wright of Harvard, MA, and his sister Edna Mae Bruce (husband Bill) of Westminster.
In addition to his parents and his wife Pauline, he was preceded in death by his sister Frances, his brother Herbert, his sister-in-law Pauline, and his close friend Beatrice Knill.
The family will welcome friends on Sunday, September 25, 2022, from 4 to 6 at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home 1212 West Old Liberty Road Winfield, MD 21784. Where funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 11 am.
