Marcus William (Bill) Bruce
Dr. Bill Bruce peacefully passed away at their home in Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster MD on October 1, 2024.
Bill was born February 15, 1934, in Washington, DC. At the age of 4 years old he was placed in an orphanage – The Swartzell Methodist Home for Children in Washington, DC a home in the Baltimore/Washington Board of Child Care in Washington, DC.
Bill attended public school K thru 6 and was transferred to the Strawbridge Home for Boys in Sykesville, MD in 1946. He attended Sykesville High School and graduated in 1952. He joined the military service and served in Korea 1953 to 1956 and in the Army Inactive Reserves unit 1962.
Bill attended George Washington University and transferred to Western Maryland College in 1960.He did his graduate work at West Virginia University, and he earned a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1970.
Bill became a teacher and a high school Athletic Coach and taught and coached in the Baltimore County Public Schools System for 28 years.
Bill coached and taught at Franklin Senior High School in Reisterstown for 12 years coaching cross country, indoor track, basketball, club gymnastics, track and field, club lacrosse, soccer and baseball.
He assisted in the opening of and taught at the Chapelgate Christian Academy. He taught several years at the Liberty Christian School and was an Adjuvant Professor at Western Maryland College and Towson College and was a graduate assistant at The Ohio State University.
Bill retired from the Baltimore County School System in 1987. Since then, Bill and Edna Mae have traveled, enjoyed their gardens, were active in their church activities, Bill enjoyed restoring his collection of farm tractors, wood working and being with and enjoying his family. The family was his most prized possession.
He leaves his loving wife of 66 years, Edna Mae Wright Bruce, and 3 children, Mark Bruce and wife Jean, Susan Hall and husband David and Michael Bruce and soulmate Lauren Jackson. Grandchildren Christopher Hall and wife Rachel and Megan Young. Also 3 great-grandchildren Lorelei Hall, Lyla Hall and Lucas Hall.
The family will greet friends at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home in Sykesville on Wednesday October 9, 2024, from 9:30am to 11:00am with a memorial service at 11:00am.
Following the service, A Military Internment will take place at the Locust Grove Church of The Brethren cemetery at 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mt Airy, MD 21771.
